Panasonic TH42PX77U user reviews
Overall, the Panasonic TH-42PX77U offers very good picture quality for a 42-inch plasma, beginning with the ability to produce a nice, deep black with plenty of detail in the shadows. Color was mostly accurate too, although we did notice a bit of false contouring and video noise in some scenes.
Detail was excellent on the TH-42PX77U for a plasma of its resolution, and we had no complaints about the sharpness of the image with either 720p or 1080i sources. The panel also can accept 1080p sources (as can the Vizio), but it would exhibit strange behavior. After we watched 1080p for about 20 minutes, the picture disappeared. Then after about 30 seconds, the picture came back on, along with a message saying “an error has been detected and recovered.” The process would repeat just about every 20 minutes, so we’d recommend avoiding 1080p sources with this set.

I am here to report that it was worth the wait. I did a little more research this time around, and in May 2007 I bought the Panasonic TH-42PX77U. While it's not quite as large as some of them out there, I really believe that this - not Vizio - is the best bang for the buck on planet earth.
Almost 100% of the retailers don't sell this model in their stores, or at all. They sell the "step-down" 75-U series version w/o anti-glare coating. When I asked why, the ignorant reps (and even a few Panasonic guys!) told me that the anti-reflective coating wouldn't really matter. Well, I firmly believe it does. I can plainly tell where some of my room's glares would be annoying, but they are virtually squashed by this screen's design. Bravo, Panasonic. I can now watch TV with the curtains wide open on a sunny day, and that's the truth. I never anticipated that it would matter, but it does. Well worth the extra $80 or whatever it was to order the better model.
On top of that, the colors are vivid and the blacks are noticeably deeper than my previous LG set. I really wanted a TV that could play standard-def stations well, and this TV really surpassed my expectations. We have also used a PS3 and an up-converting DVD player, and the picture is quite crisp. There are a few contouring hiccups (seems like older programming like an 80's movie on standard-def cable), but honestly I'm nit-picking.
I am told the 50" is even better, so I guess you can't go wrong either way. Consider this my ringing endorsement to join Team Panasonic...hope this review was useful"

I did a lot of research on HDTVs and the majority of what I read pointed me towards plasmas and Panasonic (quality/price ratio). Cnet.com was a great tool along with other customer reviews from different sites, including amazon. The picture, to me, seems much more realistic than LCD. Once you adjust the picture settings off Vivid and create a more realistic view, you begin to be amazed at the clarity and realism.
Some of the nice benefits to this model are the anti-reflective coating on the screen. I cannot control 100% of the light in my living room during the day and knew this feature would come in handy, and it has. It's $100 more from the base model, but it's worth it. The image is just as clear as the non-treated screen (42PX75U). The side speakers are great and produce clear audio. I also believe they help produce a wider range of sound coming from the TV. I do not have surround sound set up yet, but am quite pleased with the TV's audio. Having picture setting memory for each video input is great. I can have my HD cable, DVD and Wii set to three different settings that help compliment each experience.
Many folks comment on the poor standard definition viewing on their HDTVs, and I've witnessed it myself on some DLPs. But this TV can produce a nice, clear picture on non-HD channels. (A BIG plus given there are far more non-HD channels)
My TV is setup using the provided stand, which was fairly easy to assemble. Total assembly time, 5 minutes.
Lastly, I've been concerned with possible "burn-in" so I've scaled down the picture settings and only watch TV in "Just" mode to fill the entire screen. Panasonic recommends doing this for at least the first 100 hours during the TV's break-in period. Honestly, even with the picture setting scaled down, the HD picture still looks great. I guess everything is relative.
Bottom line, you cannot go wrong with this TV. You'll have a hard time finding a better TV at this price ($1350). If you buy online, do your research and make sure your vendor is reputable and a valid reseller of the brand you're planning to purchase. Local retailers will come close to the online price, but have a hard time keeping the TV in stock. That's why I purchased mine online...quicker turnaround. Good luck! "
